Ioana Dobre

My photography work as well as my cinematography approach is rooted in the natural world, in everything that resides outside of one-self. Subconsciously I look to escape into open spaces, if my physical body doesn’t travel then my mind does.

I am inspired by (and drowned) to connections that form between humans, and between humans and other beings. I seek ways to capture them in their purest, most natural form. I am fascinated by how we care for all symbiotic relations. I often think about how we create “world within worlds” in literature, in paintings, in filmmaking, and within our intimate personal space.

In my work, I seek to stay open allowing subjects to present themselves in their rawest state.. I aim to capture the essence of life: the energy of a busy street, the stillness of a forest, a ray of light peeking through buildings, the quiet joys and sorrows that surround us, and the subtle, often overlooked details that hint at something beyond the visible. I question if we are not already supersaturated with works of expression but what is it really left in the world without?

I combine contemporary digital techniques with older ones such as vintage optics, hazy filters, and 35 mm film or halogen lights – as core of my artistic direction. Without the old, there would be no new; their organic and imperfect characteristics add another layer of value and emotion to my work.
